About Us
Kentwell Hall in Long Melford, Suffolk, is one of England's finest moated Tudor houses, renowned for its extensive gardens, rare breeds farm, and pioneering historical re-creations.
The Hall itself, dating back to around 1500, is a classic example of an Elizabethan E-Plan manor house. While it retains its Tudor grandeur, including the Great Hall with its Minstrel's Gallery, the interior offers an eclectic journey through different periods of history, with restored rooms like a working Tudor kitchen and Gothick-style chambers added in the 1820s.
Kentwell is perhaps most famous for its large-scale, deeply immersive Living History Re-Creations, where hundreds of costumed volunteers bring a chosen historical period, most notably the Tudor era, to life. These events transform the entire house, farm, and grounds into a bustling 16th-century community, offering an unmatched sensory experience of the past. Beyond the re-creations, the venue hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including open-air cinema, theatre, and seasonal festivals like Dickensian Christmas.
The surrounding grounds and gardens span over 30 acres, featuring a combination of ancient and modern landscaping. Highlights include tranquil water features, ancient yews and cedars, a Yew Castle, a Camera Obscura, and a moated farm that is home to rare breed animals like sheep, pigs, and miniature Shetland ponies. Kentwell Hall operates as a privately-owned family home and is located at High Street, Long Melford, Sudbury, CO10 9BA.
